This is an advanced tool developed by Merijn Bellekom. It is available free in the anti-spyware community. Hijackthis.exe has numerous uses in a computer system. Some of them include loading of different programs, running of processes, browser helper, plugins as well as active X objects. The program is also used to monitor the system’s memory as well as location of keys within the registry in addition to the hard drive. According to its set up, one can manipulate it to favor specific needs and settings. For example, one can set it to ignore highlighted items. One can also create back up of original lay downs.

The program contains various tools such as process manager, file editors and uninstall manager as well as ADS scanners. The program also has utilities tools that enhance deletion of files. It also has NT services for rebooting. Hijackthis.exe program aims at browser hijacking activities. It never targets Trojans or viruses and worms. While using this program, one should be careful because entries displayed after running the scan are vital and necessary for smooth operation of the operating system. Users of this program need a certain level of proficiency to understand most of entries displayed after running the scan. One needs to spot spyware programs using registry keys as well as DLL files and folders.

For a user to use this program, he/she needs ample training to interpret hijacking and its logs. Another model of this program includes the trend micro, which is a free entity program that makes no partition between valid and unsafe settings. After running the scan, the program allows one to identify faulty or malicious programs. While using hijackthis.exe program, one needs to continually update the program to enable it to eliminate new hijacks. While using this program, one discovers numerous false positives. The latest version is 2.0.2 available after downloading from necessary website.

There are errors associated with this program and one should not remove the program from the PC unless the program causes errors. Since the program monitors one’s browser configurations as well as plugins, one should retain the program within the computer. To monitor any errors associated with the program, one should run the registry scan. Apart from running the registry scan, one should run performance scan to optimize memory, the central processing unit as well as Internet settings. Running a driver scan lists all missing and faulty drivers thus eliminating, hijackthis.exe-associated errors.

Vista 64 is another Operating System from Windows. Equipped with more features and higher security level Vista 64 became popular amongst many computer users. However, Vista 64 does not have the ability to cater to some products or applications that works in lower platform. Since Vista 64 is a newer OS some programs may have compatibility issues and not work with this system.

Command and Conquer Generals is a popular role playing strategy game from Electronic Arts Inc. This game is not supported by Vista 64, which is a problem for gamers who are fond of this game and are using Vista 64 as their Operating System.

To resolve Vista 64 compatibility problem with Command and Conquer game follow this instructions;

Secure a legal installer of Command and Conquer game.

Install the program. Follow the instructions provided during the installation.

Hit the Start button.

Select My Documents from the Start Menu.

Click on the folder with Command and Conquer Generals Data label.

Look for the options.ini file from the Command and Conquer Generals Data folder. Right click on the options.ini file and select delete.

After deleting options.ini. Copy these to a notepad:

AntiAliasing =
DrawScrollAnchor =
GameSpyIPAddress = 0.0.0.0
Gamma = 50
IPAddress = 0.0.0.0
IdealStaticGameLOD = High
LanguageFilter = false
MoveScrollAnchor =
MusicVolume = 55
Resolution = 800 600
SFX3DVolume = 79
SFXVolume = 71
ScrollFactor = 50
SendDelay = no
StaticGameLOD = Low
UseAlternateMouse = no
VoiceVolume = 70

To go to notepad, select the Start button. Click on the All Programs button in the Start Menu. Another menu will appear select Accessories then select notepad.

Save the file as Options.txt in the Command and Conquer Generals Data folder.

After saving Options.txt file change the file extension .txt to .ini and close the folder.

Restart your computer and your Command and Conquer Generals game will already be working.

There have been reports that options.ini is being mimicked by some spyware. Spyware is a malicious program that stealthily infects computers to gather information and Internet browsing whereabouts of the computer users. It is best to procure an anti-spyware program to remove any possible threat.

However, if you wish to manually remove the options.ini file from your computer, it is best to secure a backup of your files first. Manually removing option.ini file may cause fatal errors to your computer, so it is best to secure a backup through a CD, DVD or any other good data storage.

Adobe Flash is the reason why Metacafe, YouTube, and various video file-sharing sites work. The millions of disseminated videos available on the Internet owe it to the technology of Flash. As it is, however, as an Adobe product, the technology is proprietary and accompanied by fees, licenses, and patents.

Trends dictate that open-source software and technologies (like Mysql and Php) help run the Web. Nevertheless, for proprietary software like Adobe Flash, there was no substitute until the advent of Microsoft Silverlight, which has yet to achieve its predecessor’s status.

The MP3 file format overshadowed OGG Vorbis, although the latter has been present for some time. The open-source nature of OGG has made it accessible to developers who are working on the technology and improving it as an audio and video format. An impediment to the evolution of OGG was its inability to carry H.264 compression. This type of video compression aids in reducing file size for easy Internet upload, hence the OGG format was pushed aside as an Internet standard.

Recent Developments with OGG

Google, a staunch advocate of open-source technologies, has disclosed its scheme to incorporate OGG into its browser, Google Chrome. In addition, developers are working with OGG in the hopes that plug-ins will be unnecessary for its file format to work. Due to this, developers may embed OGG-powered videos into websites as they would set links and images.

Firefox 3.5, the latest Apple Safari, and Opera versions support OGG. As Google owns YouTube, the format may turn from Flash to OGG, with the necessary modifications and requirements. These events may foretell that more videos, if not most, will eventually run with OGG technology.

Other Developments

The rule of Adobe Flash may also be at stake due to another upcoming technology. Google Engineering Vice President Vic Gundotra focused on the promotion of HTML5, the newest version of the technology which is the Web’s backbone.

Still in the early stages, HTML5 is currently an emergent technology. Experimental demonstrations of HTML5, as well as its integration as the force behind cutting-edge Internet applications, show its leap from the drawing board into potential everyday use.

The exhibition of videos in what looked like a YouTube page model (without the use of Adobe Flash) was part of promotions for the budding language. The video playback was solely executed with HTML5.

Gundotra also likened the HTML5 video tag to a basic image tag, in terms of ease of use and additional control.

Your computer is a complex beast, with multiple systems running side by side, coordinated by the operating system. Most of us use a version of Microsoft’s Windows, which keeps track of all the settings required for the smooth operation of a healthy PC in its registry.

In the normal course of things, an average PC user will rarely be aware of the registry. When you’ve just installed new software, you may have seen a message flash onto your screen: “updating registry, please wait”. That is about as much as you want to know: on a healthy PC the registry should work quietly in the background.

In its hierarchical database structure, it records all the hardware and software settings and parameters as well as all your personalized settings in main divisions called hives, each taking a different kind of information. One records the settings related to the actual computer, another the details of the various users of the machine, while yet another stores the preferences for each particular user.

The hives function like folders, gathering the actual information in what are called keys. The top level ones mostly function like folders as well, containing sub-keys – a structure which can be repeated until the final set of sub-keys, which actually carry the data.

Windows runs through the registry every time it starts up, conveniently finding all the settings it needs in one place. But every time a setting is changed or software is uninstalled, unused keys can be left behind. On a simple level, this means that there are useless bits of information to be read and processed.

More damagingly, conflicts can creep in and your PC can start to misbehave. This is where getting hold of a registry cleaner like Uniblue’s RegistryBooster becomes an important investment in your PC’s future health.

The registry is a database lying at the heart of all Windows operating systems where all settings and options for the computer hardware, operating system and application software are stored. Per-user settings are also stored in the registry. The registry hence provides a centralized computer configuration repository, and its performance is crucial to having a responsive and reliable personal computer.

Each time an installer for an application program is executed, additions are made to the Windows registry. This can result in increased memory overhead both when the PC boots at start up and also in operational use, causing the dreaded PC slow downs as time passes and the user installs more and more application software.

Most users try to counteract this effect by uninstalling specific applications which are no longer required. However, applications which have poorly coded uninstallers, or do not have uninstallers altogether, can leave entries in the registry – the term “Software Rot” refers to the process which occurs as the PC registry fills up with possibly malformed and unused entries. In addition to this, over time the PC registry becomes fragmented, meaning that it is stored in different parts of the system hard disk, resulting in increased disk I/O and CPU cycles each time reads/writes to the registry are required.

The consequences of Software Rot are system slowdown, increased boot up times and system instability. Tools are available with the Windows operating systems such as regedit.exe and regedit32.exe which allow manual editing of the registry, however this is not something for the faint hearted! The registry’s sheer complexity makes the use of specialised registry cleaners essential, such as Uniblue’s RegistryBooster, which operates by performing a deep scan of the registry, checking for errors, correcting fragmentation and ensuring optimal PC performance through regular scans which keep the registry in tip-top shape
