Cannot uninstall Symantec because of a ccapp.exe file missing. Would like to install an authorized anti-virus version but it’s not compatible with Symantec.

I’m having problems where ccapp.exe is using up memory up to 900MB. it increases throughout the day to where it kills my system. I checked with a reg cleaner and it is valid. Also it is running from the right directory ( c:\program files\common files\symantec )
Is there a fix or is this a virus/trojan? I’ve read through many blogs and all say that this is a critical symantec app.
Please help …
