Alg.exe is a program that is installed for security purposes in the computer. The full name is application layer gateway. It belongs to Microsoft and it is incorporated in the windows operating system.

Mainly, Microsoft windows Internet connection and the firewall Internet connection use it. Instead of removing this application, one should run a free computer scan to search for threats. It is mostly essential when one uses a third party firewall or Internet connection. At times, a virus, spyware or Trojan might appear in this name but with slight variations. It is therefore always important to carry out a computer scan that will tell if the application is malicious.

It can come with a new computer as a pre-installed software and it is seen in the hard drive when one opens the folder, but it is always important to verify. If it is not in the hard drive, it could be fake software and it could be malicious. The genuine application is found in the Windows/System 32 folder in the computer. It is usually a 40kb file and thus does not use much of the memory space in the computer. The operations too do not affect the CPU settings.

In case a user wants to disable it, they can use aports.exe, though if it appears as an ICS file it is harmless and can be safely stored in the folders mostly with Windows XP. It is important to save resources before disabling. It can also be used in reconfiguration of registry systems. To prove that it is genuine, one can go to the network settings and disable the firewall and if it does not appear on the taskbar, then it is genuine since it is embedded in the firewall. It can be turned on and off and when it is on, firewall is also on, even when one disables the firewall. At times it disrupts the operation of the multimedia player and Microsoft Internet explorer.

When the application is disabled, the security settings easily block the communication ports and unless one opens many ports, the network is usually vulnerable to threats. Most of the operations of alg.exe are similar to the operations of a proxy server and most of the times they are related to security settings. It is therefore important to know that the genuine alg.exe is not a spyware, a virus or Trojan and it is not adware or a popup related operation.
